Closeout Foods Make a Great Stockpile

One of my favorite things to do while grocery shopping is hunting for closeout foods. It's like a treasure hunt for cheap groceries I know I can stockpile to fill my pantry. Even bakery items from the day old bakery section of the store can provide sustenance for a family. When purchasing from the day old bakery I never buy anything past the purchase by date. And the item must be freezer safe. Most yeasted bread, rolls, cupcakes, cake, donuts, quick bread, fruit pies, and pumpkin or chiffon pies are all freezer safe. Frozen yeasted bread will last 6 months in the freezer. Rolls, cake, cupcakes, and donuts, will last three months in the freezer. Pumpkin and chiffon pies can be frozen for one month. Quick breads can be frozen two months. Fruit pies can be frozen two to four months.

Canned goods are the best finds. They have long shelf dates and usually will have a very low closeout price. In the photo above I purchased the cans of chicken stock for $0.25ea and the cans of cranberry jelly for $0.25ea. If they last that long without eating them, I'll have cranberry jelly for Thanksgiving!

The most important thing is to check the dates on the closeout item, and if there's a reasonable amount of shelf life left don't hesitate to save money and stockpile it. There's no shame in the saving money game! Stores that are known for having great closeouts are Walmart and Kroger. Comment below if you know of anymore stores that frequently have great day old bakery and closeout foods and should be added to this list that are in your area.
